Do You Really Understand the True Meaning of Freelancing in Plain English??

Do You Really Understand the True Meaning of Freelancing Success in Plain English non Mumbo Jumbo Terms??

Then listen closely…

Because in this post we not only tell you the True Meaning of Freelancing but also the true core values, the true core ethics and the ultimate true core reasons to becoming a successful freelancer today!

We focus on 3 core-differentiating areas (from a job) that explain exactly what Freelancing is (in Plain English) and how you can use these 3 core-differentiating areas (from a job) to succeed in freelancing short, mid and long-term.

Let’s Begin: Without further hesitation here is core-differentiating area Number 1 that explains the true meaning of freelancing and how you can use this core-differentiating area to succeed in freelancing!

1) Freelancing is Much More than a Job (and we mean Everything!)

The true meaning of freelancing - much more than a job

6am Monday Morning…

Beep!  Beep! Beep!  Beep!  Beep!!

Shut up (in your mind you say) as you hit snooze and roll over (in your bed) to get another 5-10 minutes shut eye before arising to the daily grind, daily routine and daily mundaneness of:

Your ultra-boring-means-with-no-purpose,

Your ultra-boring-means-that-asks-you-why,

Your ultra-boring-means-that-leaves-you-wanting-more that is:

Your 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday Job!

What is a Freelancing then Compared to a Job in Plain English?

Just think of everything we have outlined (above) and think the Total 100% Opposite!

Think Mars (Job) vs. Venus (Freelancing),

Think Routine (Job) vs. Flexibility (Freelancing),

Think of Being a Slave (Job) vs. Total Freedom (Freelancing).

Let’s Get Serious Though Now

Freelancer Defined: A individual who is self-employed and not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freelancer)

OK let’s break that definition for you down in Plain English:

A Freelancer is (generally) not committed to any one particular employer.  Freelancers (most often) move from job to job (employer to employer) in order to make more income, grow their business and ultimately succeed in freelancing.

Whilst most job-goers often commit to their employers for years most freelancers (generally) only commit to one employer (known as Clients in Freelancing) for days, weeks or months (in some cases).

That is the True Key Difference Between a Job and a Freelancer:

Job (Generally) = One Employer for Many Years Freelancing (Generally) = Many Employers (Clients) over Many Years.

And when we say Many, we are not just talking 10, 20 or 30. It is not uncommon for Successful Freelancers to deal with hundreds of different Employers (Clients) over their entire freelancing career.

Now that we have discussed the true difference between a “Job” and “Freelancing” – let’s discuss the 3 core-differentiating factors (compared to a job) that you need to become a Successful Freelancer.

Initiative, Drive and Motivation (All Keys to Freelancing Success)

Initiative, Drive and Motivation are not just keys to Freelancing Success but also key to Success in any Job, any Project and the Ultimate Key to succeeding in all areas of life. But we are Talking About Success in Freelancing Now, And compared to a Job, You can ramp up the importance of Initiative, Drive and Motivation by at least 1000% (if not more!).

It is your job as a freelancer to create (your workload) by adhering to a set schedule (work hours) and ultimately getting projects done quickly, accurately and successfully in order to win in the freelancing game.

No one will be there each day (as a freelancer) to hold your hand,

No one will be there each day (as a freelancer) to give you work,

No one will be there each day (as a freelancer) to help you succeed.

Get it Done. Get Done Again. And then Get it Done Again!!

The above (Get it Done) is the theme of any Successful Freelancer and without Super-Initiative, Super-Drive and Super-Motivation Freelancing Success will never happen. Again, we are not stating that people in Jobs should and do not have these qualities.

We are saying you Absolutely Must have these Qualities as a Freelancer (and even more so) if you are to succeed long-term in the Freelancing Space.

Next:  Let’s talk “Ground Rules” in the context of Freelancing. Because anybody (world wide) needs ground rules but none more so than Freelancers!

2) Freelancing is About Having Ground Rules (and Sticking to Them)

The true meaning of freelancing - having ground rules

Ground Rules in Freelancing.

Is Anything More Critical??

No!  Absolutely Nothing Because, All Freelancers Should Have Ground Rules in Order to Succeed Long-Term in Freelancing.

Freelancers Must Live by Ground Rules and Die by Ground Rules.

And Why are we Being so Dramatic and Highlighting the Importance of Ground Rules?? Because in any job (when you show up on day one) you soon become aware (either directly or indirectly) of the organisation’s ground rules.  You realise that if you break a ground rule then you run the risk of not only losing your job but also your ability to pay your bills.

And what About Freelancing Ground Rules??

Quite simply there are no ground rules laid out for you on a platter (like a job). Get up each day at 11am each day if you want to, have breakfast, then start you work and then continue through the night twilight working on each and every project.

Is this the best Approach though to Freelancing Success?!

Absolutely not! Why? Well we don’t have anything against Freelancers (personally) that don’t set Ground Rules in their Freelancing business. But we have never (ever) met one personally that has become successful long term. All Freelancers need clear, direct and realistic Ground Rules in order to successfully move from project to project (Client to Client) quickly, accurately and successfully.

Not implementing Ground Rules (in your Freelancing Business) is like trying to Start a Car without putting the key in the ignition! And we are assuming your Car does need a key (obviously). Ground Rules establish not only direction (for freelancers) but ultimately a clear and logical road map to long-term success.

What are Some Examples of Freelancing Ground Rules?

Set Your Hours and Stick to Them:

Freelancing is by no means a job (and we stand firm on this statement) but you totally (as a freelancer) need to set you freelancing hours to be exactly like a job! That’s right!!

You need to treat your Freelancing Business (and Ultimately Freelancing Career) like a job in order to Succeed Long Term. Again, we are not saying you need to bring a “Job Mentality” but set your hours (for example 8am to 5pm) and stick to them.

Also don’t make the mistake of working unrealistic hours as a freelancer because this is unrealistic long-term. Clients are humans too and realise people need to sleep like they do. Set realistic hours that you can stick to not only now (at your age right now) but right up to you retire as a freelancer!

Set Communication Ground Rules:

The C Word! That is C for “Communication.”Is Anything (and we are not just talking freelancing here now) more important?? We are Here to Tell you Absolutely Nothing!! If you do not Set Communication Ground Rules (within your Freelancing Business) then you will never ever succeed.

Setting Communication Ground Rules is by no means hard… We are talking specifically on how, why and when you are going to communicate with your Client’s on projects.

The How – How do you want to come across to Clients?  Personal, Clear and Concise is a great starting point but ultimately adapt your own unique winning style.

The Why – Why (for example personal, clear and concise) do you want to come across that way to Clients? Ultimately, are you communicating that way because everything else is doing that or is it your own unique style?

The When – Quite often you will be juggling multiple projects and so the When (frequency of communication) is critical. Client updates at least once every 24 hours is a great starting point but remember… Set a frequency and stick to it!

Set Winning Ground Rules:

That’s Right!  You are in this to Win in Your Freelancing Career Right?!Well you totally need to Set Winning Ground Rules to ensure you will be as successful as possible over the long term.

For Example:

How will you Compete with your Competition?

How will you Personalise your Services from your Competition?

How will you Differentiate your Services from your Competition?

But Ultimately…

How will you Beat, Make More Money and Be More Successful than All your Competition in your Freelancing Market??

You 100% Absolutely Need to Think About (all the Critical) questions above if you are to become a Real Successful Freelancing Player in your Particular Niche.

Remember:  The Freelancers who make it real big all have the winning edge in terms of setting ground rules!

Next Up and Finally: Totally think Big Picture (with a Plan) if you are to make it big and win in the Freelancing game.  Let’s get right into it!

3) Freelancing Success is All About the Big Picture (having a Plan)

The true meaning of freelancing - success about the big picture

Thinking Big Picture is important for all Aspects of Life. A job, financial planning, investments, growth as a person and even just general day to day living. But when you are trying to define the true meaning of a freelancer to someone in Plain English.

The Big Picture always makes our top list of 3 core-differentiating factors (from a job).

Why is Big Picture Thinking so Critical in the Freelancing World?

Because as mentioned earlier we have already highlighted the key difference between jobs and freelancing.

That is: A freelancer will be juggling hundreds of projects (across multiple employers) during their freelancing lifetime – as opposed to a job person who may only work for a handful of employers across their lifetime.

In Order to Succeed in Freelancing: A freelancer must quickly learn how to juggle multiple projects quickly, accurately and successfully. And by successfully we mean not only getting paid but by receiving an all important 5-star review in order to build their freelancing profile: and ultimately land bigger, better and bolder projects in the future.

And How Exactly Will a Freelancing Achieve this Goal??

By Always Thinking Big Picture from A to Z during their Freelancing Career. The Big Picture is essentially focusing on what matters: focusing on the right projects, focusing on the right skillset and ultimately making more money (throughout one’s freelancing career) by doing this.

Focusing on the Right Projects

We are going to come right out and say it: In the Freelancing World you are either seen as “small job guy” (or gal) or “big job guy” (or gal). Yes, that’s right!  There is no in between Medium Job Guy!!

Therefore, you need to make a decision (extremely early) in your Freelancing Career whether you want to be the “Big Job Guy” or the “Small Job Guy.” By “Small Job Guy” we are obviously talking lower paid jobs that can be generally done quicker.  By “Big Job Guy” we are talking higher paid jobs that take longer to complete.

Choose Very Wisely:  Because while you may think being the “Small Job Guy” may be the quicker path to more reviews, more growth and more jobs – you may need to think again!Because once you “Specialise” in either being “Small Job Guy” or “Big Job Guy” all future Clients (looking at your proposals) will also put you in that class!

Therefore choose Wisely! And of course we totally recommend being “Big Job Guy” (if you feel you are capable) because ultimately you will make more money, land more successful projects and go much further in your Freelancing Career.

Focusing on the Right Skillset

In order to land more projects, grow as a freelancer and ultimately becoming a successful freelancer:

Nothing is More Important than Focusing on What You are Best At (In Plain English: The Right Skillset for You)

It should be plain obvious to you but we want to spell it right out for you. Focus on what you are best at in order to succeed long-term in the freelancing game.

Don’t risk becoming a generalist and going after all types of jobs because not only are you at risk of a bad review but also you are building your profile as a “generalist” rather than a “specialist.”

Just think for a moment when Leads go to Google: Are they looking for a Specialist or a Generalist?? We think you know the Answer! Specialise in the Right Skillset (what you are best at) and Win in the Freelancing Game.

Ultimately Make More Money (by Focusing on the Right Projects and Focusing on the Right Skillset)

We could send you hundreds of case studies, hundreds of examples and hundreds of visual graphs: but we won’t! Just trust us on this one. The Freelancers that Focus on the Right Projects and Focus on the Right Projects Absolutely Always Win Long-Term in the Freelancing Game.

They land more projects, land more referrals, land more clients and Ultimately become Successful Freelancers that beat all the Big Players in their field of specialisation.
